I hope you'll excuse the hat. I'm just about to head to a baseball game. I find it to be the perfect way to unwind after a long day of work. Go Dodgers. (lighthearted music) We've all heard the common term "workaholic," which is a person who works all the time. All work and no play if you will. While that might move you up the corporate ladder and into a higher income bracket, there can be some serious downsides, strains on your health and personal relationships just to name a couple. Let's take a look at why maintaining a good work life balance is very important. Number one, less stress. Job stress is real. According to a study reported by the Washington Post, workplace stress is the number five cause of death in the US, and according to the American Institute of Stress, 25% of Americans identify work as their number one source of stress. Number two, improved mental health. Take your mind off work and open it up to other things. Read books, meditate, or just go for a long walk in the sun. A challenged and well-rounded brain is a healthy brain. Number three, improved physical health. Sitting at a desk all day every day is terrible for you. Make time for the gym and for physical activity. Make time to eat right. Your body is precious, act accordingly. Number four, increase productivity. Feel fresh and more engaged during those times that you are fully focused on work. Number five, improved relationships. Quality time spent with your loved ones can strengthen those bonds and alleviate that worry from your mind. Number six, deeper happiness. Feeling in control of your life with a good balance will ultimately make you feel happier and more fulfilled. Let's take a look at how to achieve good work life balance. Learn how to say no. Learn how to delegate. Prioritize time for self and family. Have a social life. Take a vacation. Set work boundaries and hours and learn to unplug. Manage your health, mental and physical. The ultimate goal is to find a job that you love but even if you do, you still need to step away from it from time to time. Your overall happiness as well as the happiness of the people in your life depends on it. (lighthearted music)
